Brompton 18-inch Disc Brake Customization Guide

Background
All previous Brompton A/C/P LINE models feature 16-inch wheels (tire size: 349×35C). Brompton has not officially released an 18-inch disc brake model. The factory disc brake version only offers a 20-inch wheel size, which is criticized by fans for its heavy weight and bulky folded dimensions.

Based on the classic Brompton frame size, Comeplaytitanium (hexati) has redesigned custom titanium front/rear forks compatibleP LINE and T Line , enabling an 18-inch knobby-tire disc brake conversion.

Key Modifications

  • Titanium front/rear forks + custom 18-inch disc brake wheelset (e.g., SILVEROCK SR38C 3-spoke carbon wheels).

  • Weight: Modified T Line weighs ~8kg, matching the original single-speed T Line.

  • Ride Quality: 18-inch wheels improve off-road capability. The carbon frame’s vibration damping outperforms the stock steel frame, nearing the Birdy folding bike’s ride feel.

  • Folding: Compact folded size identical to the 16-inch T Line, with smooth operation for daily commuting.

Compatibility Notes

  • Wheelset: 355 disc brake wheels with 74mm (front)/112mm (rear) hub spacing (e.g., SILVEROCK SR38C).

  • Tires: Supports up to 18-inch 355×1.9 tires.

  • Drivetrain: SRAM GX 12-speed trigger shifter + Brompton 7-speed conversion kit.

  • Brakes: IRD 4-finger levers + EQUAL post-mount calipers.

Folding Adjustments

  1. Clearance: The 18-inch wheel adds 2cm diameter, requiring 25–30mm increased clearance between the rear fork and main frame when folded.

  2. Chain Alignment: With an external 7-speed drivetrain, folded chain angle may shift. Adjust derailleur limit screws to prevent cog rub. Use velcro straps to secure shifted cables and eliminate noise.

This upgrade balances Brompton’s folding convenience with enhanced portability and control. The optimized weight distribution, structural integrity, and compact fold make it ideal for commuters relying on public transit. Note: Ensure drivetrain/wheel compatibility and monitor long-term wear from frequent folding.
